Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has denied suggestions that he deliberately spat on the Manchester City badge at half-time in his side’s 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Video footage on social media appeared to show Herrera spitting on the City crest outside the tunnel to the dressing room as United headed inside trailing 2-0.

“Ander has seen footage of the incident and is mortified at any suggestion his actions were deliberate,” a spokesperson for United said.

“It was entirely accidental and there was no intent whatsoever.”

Herrera had made his first start for United the Premier League since New Year’s Day and would go on to play a crucial role in his side’s comeback, delicately teeing up Paul Pogba for the first of his brace before Chris Smalling secured victory.

United had been trailing 2-0 at half-time in a match where defeat would have handed the title to their Manchester rivals and Herrera credited senior players Ashley Young and Michael Carrick with inspiring the revival.

Of course the oldest guys with the most experience - Ash, Mike was in the dressing room - they have the power in their words but everyone was talking.

“We didn't talk too much about tactics, just about our pride and about the club - this club you can never underestimate it. Our pride on the pitch and that our fans were going to have a difficult night if we got beaten.”
