Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed home a late winner to give Jose Mourinho hist first trophy as Manchester United boss as they saw off Southampton in a memorable EFL Cup final.

Having already opened the scoring, Ibrahimovic would finish the day as the hero in a 3-2 win after Manolo Gabbiadini had offered Southampton hope of a Wembley comeback.

Ibrahimovic and Jesse Lingard put United two goals up after Gabbiadini had an early strike controversially ruled out for offside, and the Swede headed a late winner after the Saints' fightback.

WHAT THEY SAID

Jose Mourinho: "If they want it more than us, they win. If they want it more than us, they win, so we have to be sure that they don't want it more than us.

"That's the point. They want a lot, of course they want a lot. Of course they want a lot, but I don't think that they want it more than us.

"So I think the best team on the pitch will win and it will not depend on motivations because I don't think that they are more motivated than us."

Claude Puel: "I know Ibrahimovic very well from the French Premier League so I cannot be surprised by him," said Puel.

"In France he was a fantastic player but all the people say 'Okay, it is the French Premier League and not the English one'.

"But he has come here, he is 35 and he can do a fantastic job, fantastic work.

"He is clinical, very efficient and also he gives a good authority to the team. He is a character player."
