Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal made nine changes to his side for the visit of Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.

Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo were the only survivors from Sunday's goalless draw with Manchester City in the Premier League as Van Gaal gave his fringe players a run out at Old Trafford.

Memphis Depay returned to the side in a forward three with Jesse Lingard and James Wilson, while Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick were brought in for Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin. Andreas Pereira completed the midfield.

At the back, Matteo Darmian, who played the final 10 minutes against City, was chosen ahead of Antonio Valencia and joined Daley Blind alongside Smalling and Rojo with Sergio Romero between the sticks.

Manchester United: Romero, Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Rojo, Carrick, Fellaini, Lingard, Pereira , Depay, Wilson
