Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin has claimed he never came close to joining Manchester United this summer - although he did reject a move to another club because it "wasn't right" for him and his family.

Austin was strongly linked with a £15million transfer away from Loftus Road after QPR suffered relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season, with a host of clubs thought to be interested in the 26-year-old.

Standard Sport understands the Red Devils made an enquiry for Austin days before the transfer window shut, but the forward has now said that a move to Old Trafford was never a serious option.

When asked what the likelihood of joining Louis van Gaal's side was this summer, Austin told talkSPORT: "No, that was never on the cards. Not that I was aware of.

"I turned down a move, which wasn’t right for me and my family.

"[But] I didn't feel it was right for me to go, so I stayed at QPR."

Austin scored 18 Premier League goals for QPR last season, and has started the new Championship season in fine form after netting four goals in five games for the club this term.
