Jose Mourinho called on Manchester United fans to back Romelu Lukaku after declaring himself 'disappointed' with Old Trafford fans in the 1-0 win against Tottenham.

Lukaku made a superb start to life at United after signing from Everton in a £75million summer transfer, scoring seven Premier League goals to help the Red Devils sit second in the table so far.

The Belgium international has not scored in his last three League games (and five matches in all competitions), with the striker earning criticism for wasting a fine chance in the goalless draw against Liverpool.

Lukaku set up Marcus Rashford's goal in the 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield and assisted Anthony Martial's winner against Spurs on Saturday, but Mourinho was unable to hide his frustrations with some sections of the Old Trafford support after the match.

Speaking to the club's own MUTV channel - and answering a question unrelated to Lukaku - Mourinho said: "I would like the supporters to explain to me why they don’t support him so much because he gives everything and I think it is not fair when scoring the goal or not scoring the goal makes the whole difference.

"I don’t think it is fair at all. So I’m a bit disappointed - but not with him. With him very pleased."

Mourinho's side were praised for their free-scoring ability at the start of the campaign, but have come under fire of late for the Portuguese coach's perceived defensive approach - particularly during the stalemate at Anfield, after which Jurgen Klopp attacked his rivals' tactics.

But Mourinho backed his attack after the narrow win over Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs, adding: "Today there were two strikers (Lukaku and Rashford) playing together against three top central defenders - the best we have in Europe.

"They had to do the defensive job of pressing them when they were coming out with the ball, which they do very well because they have big routines of playing with three in the back."
