Jose Mourinho says he’s surprised Paul Pogba allowed Ashley Young the chance to score his free-kick against Watford, as the former Hornet bagged a brace against his old club.

Young, who made over 100 appearances for the Hertfordshire club before leaving to join Aston Villa in 2007, opened the scoring with a smart finish from the edge of the box at Vicarage Road before doubling the lead with a spectacular 25-yard free-kick.

Anthony Martial scored a third for the visitors on the verge of half-time before Troy Deeney and Abdoulaye Doucoure scored late on for Watford, giving Mourinho a scare. The three points were wrapped up by Jesse Lingard’s wonderful solo goal.

Mourinho praised Young’s form, but admitted he was surprised he was allowed to take the free-kick.

“Ashley Young trains at free-kicks and his conversion rate in training is good, so it was good he had the confidence to try it, after scoring the first goal.

"I was surprised that Paul Pogba gave him permission.

"At his age, Young's playing better than ever and I couldn't be more happy with him."

After a slight dip in form, Mourinho has seen his side win three Premier League games on the bounce and is delighted with the turnaround.

"It's important we have three wins in a row, nine points in three matches is good, and away from home we lost against Chelsea, and drew with Liverpool, and lost to Huddersfield so we needed to win here, we did well."
