Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho admitted it was "time to agree" with Alexis Sanchez's critics after axing the star from his squad on Saturday.

Sanchez has struggled to make a meaningful impact at Old Trafford since joining from Arsenal in January and became the latest victim as Jose Mourinho asserted his authority ahead of United's trip to West Ham.

The 29-year-old was left out of Mourinho's matchday squad for the London Stadium clash despite travelling to the capital with his team-mates ahead of the game.

And explaining the decision to omit one of his headline signings, the United boss said he could no longer ignore those expressing their disapproval at Sanchez's performances.

After the 3-1 defeat at West Ham heaped more misery on Mourinho, he told BT Sport: "Look for how many months are people asking for [Anthony] Martial, Martial, Martial and saying how Alexis isn't play well enough. This week it was time to agree and leave Alexis out."

The loss brought a fitting end to a difficult week for Mourinho, whose spat with record signing Paul Pogba has played out in the public eye.

And the 55-year-old admitted his team had not been aggressive enough in their defending for West Ham's second goal and also bemoaned what he thought was an offside first goal.

He told BT Sport: "We are not aggressive and intense enough to close that shot. An offside goal and an own goal."
