Manchester United still focused on Jadon Sancho transfer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer targets attackers

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed he still wants to improve his attack - despite Ed Woodward issuing a warning about Manchester United’s spending this summer.

The Norwegian accepts the transfer market will look “completely different” following the coronavirus pandemic - but intends to add to his forward line, with Jadon Sancho his primary target.

Old Trafford’s hierarchy have doubts about spending fees in excess of £60million as they and the rest of football cope with the financial hit of the game being called to a halt.

But Solskjaer – who previously spoke about exploiting the market – believes United will be in a stronger position than others post-Covid-19.

As well as a right-sided forward, he wants to bring in competition for Anthony Martial at the point of his attack, with Timo Werner and Moussa Dembele among the options he’s looking at.

"I think Mason (Greenwood), Anthony (Martial) and Marcus (Rashford) have been fantastic this season, they've scored up to 50 goals between them," he said. "Marcus got his injury, on course for his best season, Anthony too, and Mason of course is just a unique talent with his goal-scoring ability.

"But we're always looking to improve the squad. This uncertainty in the market now, who knows how football and the market is going to be, but I'm very happy with the squad I've got.

"Today's world is different to what it was two months ago. We've got to adjust, adapt, there's clubs out there struggling more than us financially. It's a new world, and I think the transfer market this summer will be completely different to what anyone thought it would be."

Woodward had previously described this summer as an “important opportunity” as Solskjaer looked to complete his overhaul of United’s squad.

The executive vice chairman has since admitted it won't be “business as usual” as the club counts the cost of lost revenues due to coronavirus, which will include playing behind closed doors if the season resumes.

But Solskjaer is eager to build on the work he’s carried out in his first 18 months as manager and emphasised the strides United have taken as he looked ahead to the game returning.

"We've got loads at stake," he told Sky Sports. "We've just started to find form, three points behind Chelsea, we've got nine games, so we're hoping to move up the table. That's what we've got to do, and whenever that starts, and we're going to try to catch them.

"We've always got this pressure at Man United of trophies, winning the next game. We've been through a difficult season, a rebuild, I think everyone knows that and has seen that. And I think we're starting to see something exciting.

"We're still in the FA Cup, we'd like to win it, the Europa League we're still in. Of course we'd like to win trophies. I think the players we have are exciting, and they're getting better and better, most of them are improving.

"What we're working towards - with the principles and the way we want to play - yes, we're settled defensively, we want to get more exciting attacking wise, but with Marcus back, Bruno and Paul (Pogba) back, you'd expect us to be more exciting."
