Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says the club have not received any approaches for assistant coach Mikel Arteta, amid speculation linking him with the vacant Arsenal job.

Arteta, who has been Guardiola’s assistant at the Etihad since 2016, has been a rumoured candidate to replace Unai Emery, having interviewed for the Gunners job when Arsene Wenger stepped down in 2018.

Though he has no managerial experience, the 37-year-old is well-regarded at the Emirates, having played for Arsenal for five years between 2011-16, eventually captaining the club.

However, when asked whether there had been any formal contact made, Guardiola said: “No.”

"I'm not a guy that puts a gun to the heads of my staff or players and says what they have to do," he told Sky Sports. "We are human beings and everyone has dreams and desires.

"Hopefully he can stay this season and the next one -- as long as possible in this club. That would be my dream, but Mikel has his own life and I will never say what he has to do."
