Jurgen Klopp has refused to rule out a Liverpool move for Thiago Alcantara, insisting he "cannot end speculation" linking the Bayern Munich midfielder with a move to Anfield.

The Reds’ interest in the Spain international, who is available for a cut-price fee as he nears the end of his contract, has resulted in one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer sagas.

For their part, Reds officials insist departures in midfield would be necessary before any such high-profile signing is made.

But, when asked about the possibility of Thiago arriving on Merseyside at his latest press conference, Klopp did not take a chance to completely quash the rumours.

He said: “If I would invent now a word that would end speculation I think I could become really rich.

“I cannot end speculation as long as the transfer window is open, so that’s all I can say about that.

“Did I mention that Thiago Alcantara is a really good player long ago? It’s nice that we are linked with him but that’s pretty much all really, it’s because he’s a good player, Liverpool’s a big club, so that’s nice.

“But apart from that, really nothing to say about it. Maybe good for you I cannot end the speculation!”

Uncertainty over the future of Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, who is also in the last year of his deal and attracting interest from Barcelona, has often been tied to a possible move for Thiago.

As reported by Standard Sport on Thursday, Klopp held talks with the Dutchman on Thursday following his return from international duty.

However, the Reds boss insists there is no problem between the pair as they prepare to start the season against Leeds United on Saturday.

He added: “Since Gini is here I had, I think, 5/600 talks with him pretty much. So, that’s exactly the same like always, nothing else to say about that.

“Of course I speak to Gini now he came back from international duty, it’s always like this. That’s all I can say about that.

“It’s absolutely fine about the future as far as we are involved in that. I cannot speak about the future in a few years but it’s all fine, it’s all good for the moment.

“Between Gini, me and the club, everything is completely fine, apart from anything to announce to you. But that’s more your problem than ours because we are completely fine with this situation.”

Another Liverpool player whose future has yet to be resolved is Rhian Brewster.

The teenager impressed during pre-season but has a number of suitors interested in striking a loan deal or pursuing a permanent transfer.

Klopp, though, is adamant that no decisions have yet been taken on the 20-year-old’s next move with so much up in the air ahead of the final weeks of the transfer window.

He continued: "Rhian is our player, a wonderful kid and big, big talent [who] scored very nice goals in pre-season.

“But the decision is about the squad and where is the perspective for who, we just haven't finished yet because we don't have to. There is so much going on.

“What I can say is that we are really with him, thoughtful about him and what is best for his development and how we can use him. It's not just him, it's all our players.

“Who is going on loan where? Nothing is decided otherwise they'd be there already. If they go or stay, there's nothing to say in public yet.”
