Andy Robertson: Liverpool deserve nothing yet - we must prove ourselves in Champions League final

Andy Robertson has insisted Liverpool ‘deserve nothing’ from this season if they fail to put in a performance worthy of Champions League final victory on Saturday.

The Reds came agonisingly close to ending their long wait for a Premier League title this term as they lost just one of their 38 games en route to 97 points.

However, that impressive record was rendered irrelevant by Manchester City, who picked up 98 points to clinch their second consecutive crown.

Of course, Jurgen Klopp’s team have a shot at the best consolation prize of all when they face Spurs in club football’s biggest fixture in Madrid this weekend.

But Robertson isn’t expecting to lift the trophy simply because of what has gone before - he accepts he and his teammates must prove themselves worthy.

He said: “I’ve heard a few people say that, but for me we don’t deserve anything yet. The Premier League shows that.

“A lot of people would say 97 points deserves the Premier League, but it didn’t because Manchester City got 98. They were that little bit better than us in the end.

“We deserve nothing, only what we put into the game and what we get out. If we have 100 per cent effort, and have a good game, play to our best, then we’ll deserve it.

“But we aren’t going into the game thinking we deserve it because we’ve had a good season and got 97 points. Never. That’d be stupid of us.”

The difference between winning and losing in this fixture is perhaps best underlined by the fact that Robertson spent the day after last year’s final defeat to Real Madrid shopping for a barbecue.

Unsurprisingly, he is hoping for a better outcome this year.

He continued: “Yeah, hopefully we’ve not got that nonsense again! I’ve still got that barbecue actually, so there’ll be no need to go to Homebase.

“But obviously we’re hoping for much happier feelings. Last year was a massive disappointment, there’s no hiding away from that.

“Hopefully we’re feeling better this time, but we know what hard work has to go in to achieve that. If we can do that, it’ll be a better party!”

The alternative to that forgettable afternoon is a homecoming parade that would see Robertson and co welcomed back to Liverpool as heroes.

But has he even considered that possibility in the build-up to a second chance at glory?

The Scotland captain added: “I hadn’t until you mentioned it! You obviously have it in the back of your head, but you can’t think about it too much.

“We have a job to do, and that’s to make these people happy and to bring them out onto the streets. The only way to do that is by winning it.

“We know how hard we will have to work and how good we will have to be. Spurs are a fantastic team who have the same dream as us.

“You don’t think about it. Maybe we’ll think about it when we have the trophy with us on the flight back.”
