Liverpool will be happy even if they don’t win either of their games against Real Madrid, according to Michael Owen.

Brendan Rodgers’ side currently sit third in their Champions League group, three points behind leaders Madrid, after a win and a loss in their first two games.

They now come up against last year’s winners in two consecutive games, first at Anfield on Wednesday and then away less than two weeks later.

Owen, who played in the competition for Liverpool and Real, believes the English side will be content as long as they pick up at least two points from both games.

Posting on his Sportlobster blog, Owen wrote: “The first of two consecutive ‘Clash of the European Titans’ matches tonight won’t be any different and given their respective starts, Liverpool will probably settle for any kind of result over the two games that leaves them in with a fighting chance for what are likely to be the defining group matches against Ludogorets and Basel before the end of the group stages.”

He added: “Despite the fact that Real Madrid are the most successful European Cup winners of all time, I personally think that famous European nights at Anfield simply cannot be beaten for atmosphere or all-round sporting theatre.

“It’s as if the crowd know that these games will be talked about for generation to come and never has the saying ‘The crowd were like a twelfth man’ been more true.”
