Liverpool chief admits top-four slot is ‘critical’

Tom Werner has warned it is critical Liverpool qualify for the Champions League this season because they are missing out on vital revenue.

Liverpool have not featured in Europe’s elite club competition since 2009 and will play in the Europa League again this season following their Carling Cup success in February.

Chelsea earned £47.3million from winning the Champions League last season and the Liverpool chairman (above) is worried a loss of income will see the Reds fall behind their Premier League rivals.

“It is critical we make the Champions League because there is so much revenue associated with that,” he said. “We see our competitors not just as Chelsea or Manchester City and Manchester United but we see Barcelona and Real Madrid as teams that are iconic and playing good football. We know our competitors are working hard. We need to work just as hard and be just as smart.”

Werner also conceded that mistakes were made in the handling of Luis Suarez’s dispute with Patrice Evra last season.

“I think we might have handled it a little bit differently in retrospect,” he told BBC Radio 5 live. “One thing is for sure, which is that Liverpool stand firmly against racism and so does Luis Suarez. Luis accepted his punishment and it is dealt with. We have moved on and lessons have been learned.”
