Chelsea defender Levi Colwill is in line to make his England debut after a precautionary injury scan came back clear.

The 20-year-old has been cleared to join up with the England squad at St George’s Park and is pushing to feature against Ukraine on Saturday or Scotland three days later.

Colwill has been ever-present for Chelsea this season but felt some discomfort after overstretching for a ball in last week’s 2-1 Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon.

He completed 90 minutes in Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest but underwent tests to check if he had sustained an injury.

Colwill was part of the England squad that won the European Under-21 Championship in Georgia over the summer and has been handed his first senior call-up by Gareth Southgate, along with uncapped Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah.

England face Ukraine in Poland in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Saturday and then play Scotland in a friendly at Hampden Park next Tuesday.

A spot in England’s defence is up for grabs as Harry Maguire continues to be a fringe player at Manchester United, with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, Brighton's Lewis Dunk and AC Milan's Fikayo Tomori also hoping to be involved against Ukraine and Scotland.

Jack Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold both pulled out of the squad on Monday due to injury. Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling will not be called up as a replacement for Grealish, despite his good start to the season.

Southgate has decided not to turn back to Sterling, who was unhappy at his exclusion last week, and will instead have a 24-man squad for the games against Ukraine and Scotland.

Sterling continues to train at Cobham with a small group of Chelsea players preparing to face Bournemouth in their first game after the international break.
