QPR manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink wants his team to build on their encouraging display against Sunderland as they look to get back on track in the Championship.

Rangers lost 2-1 in the EFL Cup last night but Hasselbaink was pleased with their first performance back at Loftus Road since their 6-0 home defeat by Newcastle.

QPR went ahead through Sandro but Paddy McNair scored twice as Sunderland gave David Moyes only his second win of the season.

Hasselbaink said: “It was a brilliant game and I am proud of my players and how they produced that kind of display. We knew this would be a difficult game but we wanted to make it a difficult game for them — and we did that.

“I told the players that if we are going to lose, this is how to lose. We showed hunger and commitment and we were almost there. Now we are going to keep on working and improving.”

QPR, who host Birmingham on Saturday, have dropped to 16th in the Championship after three games without a win but Hasselbaink added: “There needs to be perspective here because we are not panicking.”

Fulham were also knocked out, losing 2-1 against Bristol City at Craven Cottage.
