Hugo Lloris: Tottenham will end the season with no regrets despite disappointment of missing out on title

Hugo Lloris has insisted Tottenham have no regrets after missing out on the Premier League title in the final weeks of the season.

Back-to-back draws against West Brom and Chelsea handed the championship to Leicester City, with the closing minutes of Monday’s 2-2 at Stamford Bridge seeing Spurs players lose their temper and commit a series of careless fouls as they looked to wrestle their way back into a match they had been leading 2-0 at half-time.

Though Tottenham still need a win from their remaining two games to ensure they finish above Arsenal for the first time since 1995 Mauricio Pochettino’s side are highly likely to finish the season in the top three, with only a solitary point required to ensure they finish above at least one of the Gunners and Manchester City.

Despite the disappointment of missing out on a first title in over half a century club captain Lloris maintained his pride in the remarkable improvements Tottenham have made this season.

“We gave our best and there are no regrets,” he told the club website. “We can be disappointed because we started to dream about this title but if we keep the same mentality and energy, we will be ready to compete for the next few years.

“We are improving step by step and we don’t know our limits, so that’s very positive for the future, which has to be bright.

“Now we will continue to do our best, just like we have done all season.”

A draw away to their London rivals Chelsea represented a frustrating end for Tottenham’s title bid and they face the prospect of being without key midfielder Mousa Dembele not just for the final games of this season but well into the next campaign.

In charging the midfielder for violent conduct over an incident involving Diego Costa the Football Association warned: “It is alleged the player’s behaviour constituted violent conduct in circumstances where the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient.”

A Premier League record nine yellow cards represented an ignominious end for Spurs’ hopes of winning the title but Lloris maintains that his side showed character in disappointment and will come stronger to secure second place.

“We are ready to compete now,” he added. “We are young but we showed maturity in our performance again. We are starting to become men.

“We can be proud of what we've done so far but of course there are still two games to go and we have to secure second place. We've done so well that it would be a big disappointment to not keep this place.

“We have to congratulate Leicester, they have done so well, no-one could have expected the title for Leicester but no-one could have expected second place for Tottenham, and now we have to finish the job properly.

“It’s very important to finish well, to finish above Arsenal and City would mean a lot.”
