It constitutes a rather remarkable endorsement of a side when their opponent’s manager is talking them up as “one of the very best teams in Europe”.

That is exactly how Fiorentina boss Paulo Sousa described Tottenham, a side utterly transformed by Mauricio Pochettino in little over 18 months.

Spurs sit second in the league having lost just three games in the competition all season with a formidable defence that has given them the top flight’s best goal difference.

They seem almost certain to end their six year absence from the Champions League next season, but just what could they achieve.

The likes of Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund and Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid have proven that well-drilled sides with an established and experienced core can achieve remarkable success in Europe; could Spurs follow in their footsteps next season?

Have your say on how far Tottenham could go in the Champions League with Standard Sport’s poll below.
