Harry Winks’ first start for Tottenham was a dream 15 years in the making, the midfielder said today.

The 20-year-old made his first start for his boyhood club on Wednesday, completing the full 90 minutes in a 5-0 EFL Cup win over Gillingham.

Winks had made four appearances for Spurs prior to appearing in the Spurs’ starting line-up for the first time, but it was running out for kick-off at White Hart Lane that really represented a dream moment for the Hemel Hempstead native.

“I loved every minute of it, it’s something I’ve been waiting for since I was five,” Winks said.

“To go out there and start the game and win as well, that capped it off. I’m over the moon about it.

“We were in control from start to finish but in any game, especially in the cups, teams can catch you on the counter-attack so as soon as Christian [Eriksen] scored it settled the nerves and from there, we took it on a step further.”

Winks wasn’t the only Spurs youngster to make an impression in the EFL Cup, with Mauricio Pochettino handing a start to Cameron Carter-Vickers and Josh Onomah, the latter scoring his first goal for Tottenham.

Marcus Edwards, the 17-year-old Pochettino said reminded him of Lionel Messi, also appeared, making his debut off the bench.
