Harry Maguire sits out England training ahead of Euros opener but Bukayo Saka returns

Harry Maguire did not train with the rest of the England squad on Wednesday morning, as fears grow over his readiness to play a part in the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 campaign.

Maguire missed the end of the club season after damaging ankle ligaments while playing for Manchester United, but was still included in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the tournament.

He was the only one of that party not to train as part of the main squad at St. George’s Park on Wednesday, instead continuing his rehabilitation in the gym.

England begin the group stage at Wembley against Croatia on Sunday and it seems inevitable that they will do so without Maguire.

Southgate has previously admitted that he may have struggled to justify including Maguire and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson - who is just back from a three-month absence - had Uefa not expanded the permitted squad size for the tournament.

The England boss said previously that any contribution from that pair would be a “bonus” but while Henderson has declared himself fit to start after making his comeback as a substitute in the friendly win over Romania on Sunday, there is still no date being put on Maguire’s return.

Better news for Southgate was the return to training of Arsenal star Bukayo Saka.

The youngster scored his first England goal in a man of the match display against Austria last week but sat out the Romania warm-up because of a minor injury.
