Harry Kane says England can be inspired to win World Cup by Liverpool's run to Champions League final

Harry Kane says England can take inspiration from Liverpool's run to the Champions League final when they compete at the World Cup.

The Tottenham striker, who on Tuesday was confirmed as Gareth Southgate's captain for the tournament , knows other squads boast superior talent but pointed to Saturday's final in Kiev.

Liverpool initially struggled in a relatively easy Champions League group before conquering all before them with attractive, attacking play to meet Real Madrid, and Kane has been inspired.

He said: "I think we can win it. We're not going to be favourites to win it.

"We know we're not favourites to win it but you look at this season for example, nobody would have thought Liverpool would have got to the Champions League final and they did.

"You look at Man United, in the (Sir Alex) Ferguson days, when they had a young team and dominated the Premier League for years to come.

"It's not really an excuse that we're young, it could be a good thing. I believe we can win it and that's what we're trying to do. Anything else is not good enough, really."

The summer tournament starts on June 14 as Russia face Saudi Arabia, with England's first test four days later against Tunisia.
