Australia and New Zealand have been named as co-hosts for the 2023 Women's World Cup.

The joint bid was chosen by the Council of football's world governing body FIFA, which met on Thursday afternoon.

The southern hemisphere bid saw off competition from Colombia on the day, with Brazil and Japan having dropped out earlier on in the process.

It marks a historic victory for the two nations, who will host the first-ever major international tournament held in Oceania.

Australia's women's team qualified for the 2019 tournament and reached the last-16 knockout stage before heading out penalties to Norway.

As part of their bid to host the tournament, 13 venues in 12 cities will be used, with the final scheduled to be held in Sydney.

The host cities from Australia are Sydney (two venues), Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Launceston and Adelaide.

New Zealand will contribute with five cities hosting matches, with Wellington, Auckland, Hamilton, Dunedin and Christchurch put forward.
