FA should be more 'proactive' when disciplining Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho - Graham Poll

Different approach: Graham Poll doesn't think handing Jose Mourinho (centre) fines and stadium bans will deter him from future incidents

Jose Mourinho should be handled in a more proactive way by the Football Association as stadium bans and fines will not act as a good enough deterrent for the Chelsea boss, according to former official Graham Poll.

English football's governing body charged the Portuguese coach with misconduct and fined him £40,000 as well as handing him a one-match stadium ban last week for his behaviour at half-time of Chelsea's 2-1 defeat to West Ham at Upton Park last month.

The punishment meant Mourinho was unable to take his place on the bench when Chelsea took on Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday - a game which they lost 1-0 - while the Blues boss also has another separate suspended one-match stadium ban for saying referees are "afraid" to give decisions to Chelsea.

Despite labelling the FA's sanctions for Mourinho as "harsh", former referee Poll has admitted such punishments are unlikely to put the Chelsea coach off from falling foul with the football authorities in the future - with a proactive approach likely to be a better deterrent for the Portuguese tactician.

"The FA stadium ban is harsh – it’s more severe than a touchline ban and coupled with the £50,000 fine it’s a very harsh punishment, but that’s all it is – it’s not a deterrent," Poll said in an interview with bwin.

"I would favour a more proactive approach because the ban is served and then exactly the same thing happens again.

"What exactly this proactive approach looks like, I’m not too sure – but we need to have something that educates and mitigates against human error."
