Referee Mark Clattenburg will be disappointed with his performance in Saturday's FA Cup final, according to former official Howard Webb.

Jesse Lingard's volley in extra time proved to be decisive as Manchester United saw off Crystal Palace courtesy of a 2-1 victory at Wembley.

But Palace fans were left feeling aggrieved after two controversial decisions by Clattenburg in the opening stages of the game.

The first saw Connor Wickham called back after being fouled by Chris Samlling, despite being clean through on goal.

Joel Ward was also unable to benefit from an advantage in a similar incident when Clattenburg blew up for an infringement by United defender Marcos Rojo.

"He will be disappointing with his performance on Saturday," Webb told the Times. "One of his great strengths as a ref is knowing when to let play continue and flow.

"On any other occasion he would have delayed blowing his whistle and given himself a bit more thinking time for both of those first-half incidents.

"He definitely should have waved play on but after he has had a chance to look back on it he will know that he was too quick to whistle.

"Perhaps the occasion got to him and he was too keen to impress," Webb added.

Clattenburg is set to be a part of Euro 2016's officiating team this summer and will also take charge of Saturday's Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at the San Siro.
