Former Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has been suspended from football for two months and fined £375 for betting-related offences.

The 45-year-old was found guilty at a Football Association at an independent disciplinary hearing on Wednesday after allegations he had intentionally influenced betting markets during Sutton’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal in the fifth round of the FA Cup in February.

Shaw found himself at the centre of a media storm after he was shown eating a pie on the substitutes’ bench during the match.

An FA statement confirmed: “Wayne Shaw has been fined £375 and immediately suspended from all football and all football-related activity for two months after he was charged in relation to a breach of FA Rules," read an FA statement.

“It was alleged the former Sutton United goalkeeper intentionally influenced a football betting market during the FA Cup Fifth Round tie against Arsenal on Monday, February 20, 2017, contrary to FA Rule E5(a).

“The charge, which he denied, was found proven following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today.”

The incident, which led to Sutton inviting him to resign from the club, took place in the 83rd minute of the cup tie after a bookmaker had offered odds of 8-1 that he would be filmed eating during the match.

Shaw admitted in May that the aftermath of ‘piegate’ had sent him into depression.

“My world fell in," the goalkeeper said. “I was in tears. I had never been sacked in my life.

“It's on my mind every day, it probably will be for a long time.

“I haven't made any money and my friends haven't made any money.

“I probably got carried away, after a whole career of having the mickey taken out of me. That was all it was meant to be.”
