France vs Germany: Olivier Giroud seeks revenge for their World Cup defeat in Brazil

Olivier Giroud vowed France will be out for revenge for their World Cup exit when facing Germany in their Euro 2016 semi-final.

Les Bleus face the world champions in Marseille on Thursday after easing past Iceland 5-2, a commanding display that raises hopes the hosts can turn the tables on Germany after losing at the quarter-final stage in Brazil two years ago.

France beat Germany 2-0 in November — a match completely overshadowed by the terrorist attacks in Paris on the same night which claimed 130 lives — and Giroud, who scored twice last night, said: “They are the world champions and often in the last four of major tournaments.

“It will be a great match. We have a lot of desire to try and get our own back for what happened in the World Cup. We have already beaten them here in a friendly match.

“We won 2-0 but it will be a different game with the surroundings we are familiar with in Marseille. I hope that the French public are as excited in the stadium as they were last night and support us all the way.

“We are lucky to play a European Championship semi-final in front of a home crowd and from my perspective I am very proud of what this French side is achieving.

“I hope that we will once again come up with the right result.”
