England vs Wales: Aaron Ramsey reveals master plan to silence Wayne Rooney

Giuseppe Muro15 June 2016

Wales plan to defend deeper against England to stop Wayne Rooney controlling their crunch Group B game from his creative position in midfield.

Rooney impressed in the role during England’s 1-1 draw with Russia and Aaron Ramsey has revealed Wales will try to stifle the England captain tomorrow.

Ramsey said: “Rooney is a fantastic player. He has great ability on the ball and a range of passing. We will have to look out for him. Hopefully we can keep him quiet.

“It is not an easy position for him to play [in midfield] but a player of his quality probably finds it easier to slot into there. We defend as a team, we can drop deep and be tough to break down so hopefully that works in our favour.”

Wales have not beaten England since 1984 and Ramsey said: “It is about time we changed that.

“We have ticked off a few things along the way, we have closed the gap and hopefully we can show that on the big stage.

Wales keeper Wayne Hennessey looks to be winning his battle to be fit to face England after missing the 2-1 win against Slovakia with back spasms. Captain Ashley Williams is also expected to be fit, despite needing treatment to swelling after a kick to his leg in Wales’ opener at the Euros.
