Danny Rose's relationship with Tottenham deteriorated further today after it emerged he is contesting a maximum fine for questioning the club’s ambition and wage structure.

The 27-year-old has been docked two weeks’ wages — worth a maximum of £130,000 — after giving an interview in which he claimed players are underpaid and demanded big-money signings “you don’t have to Google”.

Standard Sport reported yesterday there is disquiet within the squad at the pay policy, which sees players paid a lower basic wage than many of their counterparts at clubs in the top half.

Yet Tottenham have taken a dim view of his outburst — manager Mauricio Pochettino was due to speak on the matter at a lunchtime press conference — and speculation will now increase over Rose’s future as he fights the club’s sanction.

There is interest in Rose from Chelsea and Manchester United and Tottenham must decide if they are prepared to lose two full-backs to direct rivals in the same transfer window, following Kyle Walker’s £50million move to Manchester City last month.

Players challenging a club fine must appeal to the Football Association and the Premier League with the Professional Footballers’ Association on hand to aid the process if required.
