Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says Daley Blind faces a "long" spell out after the midfielder hurt his left knee playing for the Netherlands in a European Championship qualifier.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Van Gaal said Blind's knee was in a brace and that the player would go for a scan after 10 days of rest.

The manager said: "It's not so bad as the doctors are thinking after the match, but it shall be a long story, I believe, but not six months or something like that."

Blind was injured in the first half of the Netherlands' 6-0 win over Latvia on Sunday.

The defensive midfielder is just one name on an increasingly lengthy injury list at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal added: "Angel Di Maria has trained today normally so I don't think that is a question mark, but Luke Shaw is.

"David De Gea is good, no problem.

"I think I have to wait for the reaction in training with Michael Carrick, but I also expect he's ready to play."
