Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has set his sights on a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

The 21-year-old has already been capped at Under-21 level and now wants to make his senior debut. The right-back is in contention to be named in England manager Southgate’s squad next Wednesday for this month’s European qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro.

Wan-Bissaka, however, has also represented DR Congo at U-20 level and could become a full international for them instead.

But, when asked what his highlight of the season was, the defender said being picked for the England U-21s was right up there — and revealed his aim is to be part of the England senior set-up.

“It is quite tough [to pick a highlight] to be honest,” Wan-Bissaka said. “The England [U-21] call-up, I would say that one. I didn’t expect that.

“I was already in the Under-20’s, so I just thought I would be playing there. But, obviously, that [the U-21s] was the target, so now I have reached that goal, the next is to be in the seniors. Hopefully, that comes. That is the next target.”

Southgate has given plenty of young players opportunities since being appointed England manager and Wan-Bissaka added: “It shows that there is a clear path [to the senior team]. There is an opportunity for me to get there.”
