Crossrail hit by labour shortage as electricians snapped up to work on new Tottenham stadium

Contractors for the government-backed Crossrail scheme are struggling to find mechanical and electrical workers for a final push to complete the project because so many have moved to Tottenham’s new stadium site.

According to Construction Inquirer, M&E workers on Spurs’ Northumberland Park Project are being paid £400 per day — more than double the London average — which has left other sites across London, including Crossrail, facing a shortage of workers.

A source told the Inquirer: “There are still hundreds of electricians working on Crossrail and they are looking for more on some sites.

“You always need more M&E resources at the end of big infrastructure jobs like this, but loads of workers have upped and gone to Spurs, where they are paying big money.”

The new central London Crossrail stations are due to open at the end of this year. Around 3,000 contractors are working 24 hours a day to try to finish Spurs’ 62,062-seat new home in time for the start of next season, with at least 500 believed to be M&E specialists.

The club have until June 14, the day the fixtures for the new Premier League season are announced, to inform the FA if they want to take up the option to play some home games at Wembley before moving to their new stadium at a later date.

To play in two different home stadiums in the same season, Spurs would need permission from the Premier League board of chief executive Richard Scudamore, who has announced he will step down this year, and two non-executive directors.

The club are expected to earn an extra month to work on the project by starting the season with three away games before the September international break.
