Tottenham are expected to complete the signing of Cristian Romero from Atalanta on Friday, with the Argentina centre-back due in London on Thursday to finalise his £47million move.

Romero is due to complete a medical and sign a five-year deal, and could be unveiled to supporters ahead of Sunday's home friendly against Arsenal.

The 23-year-old helped Argentina to Copa America glory on July 10 and can be expected to take time to bed in, with Spurs starting the season with a visit from Manchester City on Sunday week.

Harry Kane is also increasingly likely not to be involved in the fixture, regardless of which club he is playing for, with the striker on Wednesday still on holiday in Florida.

Kane was supposed to report for pre-season training on Monday but is unlikely to be able to train with his teammates by the end of this week, as mooted, because he will need to isolate for at least five days upon his return.

With so little football since Euros, Kane is set to miss the start of the season, increasing the headache for new Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Speaking after last night's pre-season friendly draw at Chelsea, Spurs boss Nuno said he would like to speak with the England captain but insisted Spurs wanted to avoid a public row by keeping discussion of the situation in-house.

"I expect to speak with Harry soon and I haven’t had the chance yet," Nuno said. "It is not that I don’t want to comment [on Harry]. What I believe is all these issues related to Harry we should discuss internally among us and try to avoid any kind of public argument or discussion about it.

"Us, we have to focus on what is important. We have to solve the situation but first between us.

"We solve the situation internally with the club. Speaking and trying to reach a better solution and conclusion to this situation.

"All pre-season for all clubs has been hard in terms of preparation, I know this is a different aspect. I know it is different circumstances but it has been very hard for everybody.

"Anything in relation to Harry is internal so first of all we have to, first of all, solve the problems ourselves and then I will speak with you [about him]."

A Hakim Ziyech double put Chelsea in charge at Stamford Bridge in the Mind Series last night but Spurs fought back with goals from Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn.
