Concern for Tottenham with Harry Winks in race to be fit to face Arsenal

Harry Winks faces a battle to be fit to face Arsenal after he was forced to withdraw from the England squad with strained ankle ligaments.

The Tottenham midfielder twisted his right ankle against Crystal Palace on Sunday and will not join up with England for the friendlies against Germany and Brazil at Wembley.

Winks hopes to be fit for the north London derby at Emirates Stadium a week on Saturday but he will need to recover quickly to be ready.

The 21-year-old had a scan on Monday and is desperately disappointed to have to pull out of the England squad. Winks impressed on his England debut against Lithuania in October and was eager to use the two games to persuade Gareth Southgate he should go to the World Cup.

Harry Kane has also withdrawn from the England squad to stay in London for treatment.

Kane hurt his knee in a heavy challenge against Palace and Spurs are also worried about taking any risks because he has only just recovered from a hamstring injury.

Tottenham are still assessing Kane but it is taken as a positive sign that he played on for more than 50 minutes against Palace after taking the knock.

England boss Southgate is already without Dele Alli because of a hamstring injury and the withdrawals of Kane and Winks have further disrupted his plans for the World Cup warm-up games against Germany on Friday and Brazil next Tuesday.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson is also a doubt for the friendlies because of a thigh problem.

West Brom midfielder Jake Livermore has been called up to the squad, who were due to train at St George’s Park today.
