Malky Mackay will have up to £25million to spend on players this summer to ensure Cardiff City’s return to the top-flight after a 51-year absence lasts more than one season.

The Welsh club clinched promotion to the Premier League with a 0-0 draw at home to Charlton last night, sparking celebrations at the final whistle with thousands of fans streaming onto the pitch.

Vincent Tan took over Cardiff in 2010 and last summer controversially changed the club’s kit from blue to red because that colour is lucky in parts of Asia.

But the Malaysian businessman today gave the fans good news as he revealed the club’s summer budget.

“We need to strategise well and we’d like to spend some money — maybe £20-25million,” said Tan. “Others have spent a big amount of money and don’t do well, so we will try to spend smartly.”

But whatever funds are available, Mackay knows the size of the task he faces next season.

“It’s a huge challenge,” said the former Watford manager. “We are going into one of the best leagues in the world. We are going to plan properly. That has started already and we will now put that in action. We will make sure the structure we have keeps striding forward because change is constant.”
