Jose Mourinho left Diego Costa on the bench and opted to hand Didier Drogba his first Chelsea start since returning to the club during the summer window.

The Ivorian has not represented the Blues in Europe since May 2012, when his cool penalty kick saw Chelsea win a first Champions League title at the Allianz Arena.

Elsewhere, Filipe Luis was named in Mourinho's starting XI for the first time since he secured a £16million move from Ateltico Madrid in July.

Azpilicueta dropped to the bench to make way for the Brazilian, while Ramires made the starting XI ahead of Andre Schurrle.

For the visitors, Kevin-Prince Boateng Julian Draxler and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar were all named in the starting line-up.

Chelsea starting XI: Courtois; Ivanovic, Cahill, Terry, Filipe Luis; Matic, Fabregas; Ramires, Willian, Hazard; Drogba.

Schalke starting XI: Fahrmann, Hoger, Ayhan, Neustadter, Fuchs, Boateng, Aogo, Sam, Meyer, Draxler, Huntelaar.
