Chelsea's official Instagram account has hinted that the club could bring back former midfielder Frank Lampard after telling fans to "hang in there".
Lampard will leave New York City, the club he joined in 2014, when his contract expires at the end of this year, with the midfielder saying he intends to announce his next move soon.
Standard Sport understands that Chelsea have always wanted to bring back their all-time leading goalscorer in a coaching or ambassadorial role, although they haven't yet approached the 38-year-old over a possible job.
With Chelsea fans keen to know Lampard's next move, the club have suggested on social media the 38-year-old may be on his way back to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea's official Instagram account left a comment on a fan page's photo of supporters "patiently waiting...the return" of Lampard with the words: "Hang in there!"
Lampard has made 31 appearances for New York City, scoring 15 goals in the process including the club's first-ever hat-trick against the Colorado Rapids in July.
Speaking on Monday about his stint in America, Lampard told New York City's website: "As my time at NYCFC comes to an end, I would like to thank so many people for the kindness and support that they have shown me over the last two years.
"My teammates have been a pleasure to play alongside. The amazing fans have given me incredible support and backing.
"I have very much enjoyed my time, and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to play for such a great club and in such an incredible city."
