Chelsea have returned home from their training camp in the Republic of Ireland early following a coronavirus scare in the group on Thursday.

The Blues cancelled a pre-season friendly against Drogheda United on Thursday night after identifying a “possible positive” Covid-19 case in their travelling party.

That individual moved into isolation and Thomas Tuchel’s squad took part in an internal game instead of the friendly.

The west Londoners have now returned early to their Cobham training ground to continue preparations for the new season. The squad were supposed to remain at their base in Ireland over the weekend. The individual who tested positive has remained behind to isolate.

A club spokesperson said on Friday: “With the cancellation of last night‘s friendly game, the team’s training camp has moved back to the club’s training ground early to continue preparations for the game against Bournemouth.”

It is understood that there were no issues with supporters or hotel staff getting too close to players as they went about their business at the training base.

Tuchel’s side face Bournemouth on Tuesday before meeting London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham in pre-season games ahead of the new campaign.

A number of clubs have seen their pre-season plans disrupted due to coronavirus, with Arsenal having to cancel a trip to Florida following an outbreak.
