Chelsea FC confirm Billy Gilmour contract extension with Thomas Tuchel still to make decision on midfielder

Chelsea have exercised an option to extend midfielder Billy Gilmour’s contract until the summer of 2024.

The Scotland international, who spent last season on loan at Norwich, would have been entering the final 12 months of his deal this summer.

It remains to be seen whether he will be able to force his way into Thomas Tuchel’s plans ahead of the new season, with Conor Gallagher’s return from a successful loan at Crystal Palace set to add further competition in midfield, but the Blues have moved to secure his immediate future.

Gilmour made his breakthrough at Stamford Bridge under Frank Lampard, but was sent out on loan by Tuchel last summer in pursuit of more first-team opportunities.

He was used sparingly by then Norwich boss Daniel Farke in the early part of the campaign but became a fixture under Dean Smith when he took over at Carrow Road in November, eventually making 31 Premier League appearances.

Signed from Rangers’ youth academy, Gilmour made his Scotland debut last summer, shining in the goalless draw with England at Euro 2020 and becoming a regular under Steve Clarke during World Cup qualifying, though he was part of the side that lost to Ukraine in a qualifying playoff earlier this month.
