Chelsea defender Gary Cahill will "take a step back" from international duty after holding talks with Gareth Southgate but did not rule out playing for England again.
The 32-year-old was included as part of the World Cup squad but only featured once - in the final group game against Belgium where Southgate rested his preferred starting XI.
Cahill was the oldest member of the squad and believes it is time to let younger players come through, given the success of Southgate's youthful squad in Russia.
"I think it's time that I take a step back now," he told Chelsea TV.
"I feel it's the right moment to do that and I'm proud of what I've achieved. I've made over 60 caps and captained my country on a few occasions, which was a huge honour in my career.
"I can see now there's a younger generation and to take a step back now is the perfect time."
Since making his debut in a 4-0 win over Bulgaria in 2010, Cahill has made 61 appearances for England, scoring five goals, and the Blues captain revealed he would never turn down the opportunity to play for England again if required.
"I've been hugely honoured to play for my country and I would never shut the door - if I'm ever needed then obviously I'm there," he added.
"Such is my relationship with the manager, he was fantastic. We had a chat at the end of the tournament and he could understand where I was coming from.
"I said to him if there's injuries or I'm needed then I'm available. But in terms of the friendlies coming up, they're looking at other players and it's probably better for them to play than me."
