Barcelona’s 4-0 loss to Liverpool on Tuesday night and subsequent Champions League exit at Anfield have seen the Catalan club make all the wrong headlines back in Spain.

Ernesto Valverde’s side saw their 3-0 lead from last week’s first leg overturned and Barcelona-based daily Sport called it “the biggest embarrassment in history”.

“Another European debacle,” was El Mundo Deportivo’s assessment of the Spanish champions’ dramatic defeat against Jurgen Klopp’s team. “An even bigger shipwreck than Roma,” another piece was entitled. “Anfield devours a disastrous Barca in a performance even worse than the one in Rome," the paper went on to add.

“Four stabs in the heart for Barcelona fans,” said Catalan daily ARA, in reference to the goals scored by Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum.

“Anfield dynamites Barcelona,” La Vanguardia added, while L’Esportiu spoke of a “ridiculous repeat” of the Catalans’ 3-0 defeat and European exit to Roma last season. “They have learnt nothing,” their front page lamented.

“Barca burn on the bonfire at Anfield,” El Pais said, noting that “the Azulgrana repeat the debacle of last year in Rome and miss out on the Champions League final in Madrid.”

“Tragedy at Anfield,” was AS’ offering on the night. “A majestic comeback from a depleted Liverpool that ridicules a Barca in a fitting metaphor of the paralysis suffered a year ago in Rome,” the newspaper went on to add.

Marca called it a “hecatomb” and then a “historic failure” in their Wednesday edition. “From a holiday in Rome to a concert in Liverpool,” they said inside. "And not the Beatles, exactly. Two of the darkest nights in Barcelona’s history, in the space of a year.”

El Mundo made reference to an “unforgivable fiasco”, with ABC taking aim at the coach. “Valverde ruins Barcelona,” the Madrid-based newspaper said, while Sport considered that “the Champions League is too big for Valverde”.

“Valverde is the crossfire,” AS added, pointing to the 55-year-old’s now uncertain future at Camp Nou. “On the edge of the abyss,” Marca said of the Barca boss on Wednesday and in Catalonia, Esportiu warned that “the disaster could have consequences for everyone”.
