Arsene Wenger has been warned against becoming the next England manager, should the FA offer the job to him.

The Arsenal boss is considered the leading candidate by the Football Association as they look to find a permanent successor to Sam Allardyce after parting company with the 61-year-old last week following revelations from the Daily Telegraphs’ investigations into corruption in football.

Wenger was considered for the position as recently as last summer after Roy Hodgson vacated the role, and with the Frenchman yet to sign a contract extension at Arsenal the FA’s interest remains firm.

Under-21 coach Gareth Southgate will manage the senior team for four matches, running into March of next year, just three months before Wenger’s current contract expires.

Nonetheless, the Gunners boss has been warned against taking the role, by club legend Ian Wright.

"[I'd say] don't do the England job, because it's too much pressure," said Wright. "He's going to get so much stick.

"You see the amount of stick he getting from Arsenal [fans] when he's trying to do his stuff. I wouldn't like to see him go through [these] 20 years, and then the last 10 years it's been [like this] for him.

"And then go to England and it not quite work out and you get that kind of stick as well… That's a selfish reason, personally."

The 66-year-old celebrated his 20th year with the Gunners with a 1-0 victory over Burnley yesterday that saw them move up to third-place in the Premier League table.
