Arsene Wenger is confident Alexis Sanchez wants to remain at Arsenal beyond this summer, and says any contract extension now rests on agreeing a deal with the forward's agent.

Speculation persisted this morning over Sanchez’s future, with one report suggesting the Chile international is prepared to see out the final year of his contract if certain assurances are made.

Sanchez has 14 months left on his existing contract with Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Chelsea all interested in exploring a deal this summer.

However, Wenger said: "I believe that he basically wants to stay at the club, and it’s down to finding an agreement with his agent."

Sanchez is seeking a vast hike in wages from his current £130,000-a-week to a figure in excess of £250,000-a-week to ensure parity with the Premier League’s highest earners.

Wenger admitted: "The players have to first see whether they are happy at the club.

"Most of the time it’s down to finding an agreement and the finances are involved in it, yes."
