Arsenal's central issue: Arsene Wenger must stop Thiago Alcantara and Xabi Alonso dominating midfield for Bayern

James Olley15 February 2017

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has midfield options again with Granit Xhaka available after serving a four-game domestic suspension and Mohamed Elneny returned from the African Cup of Nations.

He conceded that Bayern Munich are likely to dominate possession and so a midfield pairing of Xhaka and Francis Coquelin could make sense to break up the rhythm set by Xabi Alonso and Thiago Alcantara.

But Xhaka’s temperament has been questioned after nine red cards in three seasons and so Wenger might deploy Elneny, as he did when they found themselves facing another evening without the ball at Barcelona last season.

Thiago and alonso have scored six goals and five assists between them in all competitions this term.
