How Arsenal match-winner David Luiz is also making a difference behind the scenes

1/33

David Luiz made his mark on the pitch on Sunday but Calum Chambers has revealed how his team-mate has been helping behind the scenes since his arrival at the club.

The Brazilian, who joined Arsenal in the August transfer window for £8million from Chelsea, had made an error-strewn start to life at Emirates Stadium.

However, Luiz turned a corner on Sunday as he scored his first Arsenal goal and, more importantly perhaps, helped his side keep a clean sheet.

Chambers said: “David has been brilliant. No one in the club has a bad word to say about him.

“He is one of the nicest guys. He talks to you, gives you advice, and makes everyone feel like he is giving you his undivided attention.

“Off the pitch, he is a great guy and on the pitch he brings his qualities and is playing well.

“He brings some added experience — he was won things — and I can learn from him both on and off the pitch.”

Luiz scored the only goal of the game against Eddie Howe’s side with a header after nine minutes from Nicolas Pepe’s corner. The Gunners should have scored more goals in the first half before the visitors improved after the break.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang had a quiet game, while Pepe — despite his goal assist — was once again disappointing and hooked for youngster Gabriel Martinelli just after the hour mark. Arsenal had just two shots on target.

Despite their stuttering display, Arsenal go into the international break in third place and just one point behind champions Manchester City.

With defensive trio Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding and Kieran Tierney all pushing for starting spots following injury and Alexandre Lacazette expected back soon, there is plenty of reason for optimism in the red corner of north London.

“Is there more to come? Yes, we have got a really strong squad, a lot of quality players,” Chambers said.

“We know we have got quality, we have just got to keep working hard and believing in ourselves and the results will come.

“It is something we were speaking about before the game, building up momentum, especially in a home game.”
