Arsenal injury boost with Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney on the comeback trail

1/27

Arsenal have received a double injury boost with the news that full-backs Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney are due to return to training a month ahead of schedule.

The pair are both yet to feature this season as they continue their comebacks from injuries picked up before the campaign begun.

Bellerin has not played since January after injuring his knee against Chelsea, while Tierney underwent surgery over the summer to solve a groin issue.

Arsenal had originally been planning for both defenders to be back in full training in October, but an update from the club this morning revealed the duo are ahead of schedule.

Bellerin is “continuing with on-field rehabilitation” and the fact he is progressing well means he should take part in full training next month.

Similarly, Tierney is also due to return to full training around the same time and he is currently receiving treatment and undergoing further assessments.

The news is a boost for head coach Unai Emery, with both players likely to be his starting full-backs when fit.

Tierney’s early return date could also have an impact on the future of fellow left-back Nacho Monreal, who is a target for Real Sociedad.

The Spanish club want to bring in the 33-year-old before Monday’s European transfer deadline and Tierney’s progress in returning from injury could help facilitate that deal.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have no fresh injury concerns going into Sunday’s North London derby with Tottenham at Emirates Stadium.

Defenders Rob Holding and Dinos Mavropanos will both miss out, but they are progressing well in their comebacks from knee and groin problems respectively.

Holding played 90 minutes for Arsenal’s under-23s against Everton last week and could return next month.

Midfielder Emile Smith Rowe also played 80 minutes in that match and 90 for the under-21s on Tuesday against Northampton as he recovers from a groin injury.
