Arsenal’s green credentials have been endorsed with a Gold Award from the Mayor of London in the Business Energy Challenge 2015.

With the club committed to ensuring that The Emirates is a high-tech, modern arena that is not the drain on the community this award represents major validation for the club, who took major steps to improve their operations this season.

Central to that has been the replacement of the ground’s halogen floodlights with more efficient LED lighting, which has cut energy consumption by 30 per cent.

Since moving in to the stadium in 2006 Arsenal have recycled around 10 tonnes of cardboard and plastic every month, whilst each matchday sees a further 1.5 tonnes of glass salvaged.

A total of ten London organisations, including the club and exhibitions venue Excel London, were handed the gold award for having the best energy intensity ratings.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson praised the winners for balancing business success with green initiatives. He said: “In a few weeks I will be travelling to the UN climate conference in Paris and I am very proud that I will go with such great stories to tell about what our businesses are doing to play their part.”
