Arsenal chairman Sir Chips Keswick refused to be drawn on questions over Arsene Wenger’s future today after the manager’s own cagey responses.

Keswick, who earlier this month issued a brief statement in which he insisted any decision over whether Wenger’s future would be “mutual”, said he had “nothing” to say when questioned by Sky Sports News outside a London hotel.

“I never make press statements,” Keswick added. “You know that, I’m not about to start now.”

The 77-year-old also refused to answer when asked whether he thought Wenger was the right man for the job. He did, however, admit that the season had “started well but become rather disappointing”.

Arsenal currently find themselves sixth in the Premier League table, six points off a top four spot with two games in hand, having been eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich in a 10-2 aggregate defeat at the last 16 stage.

In his press conference earlier today Wenger declined on four separate occasions to offer any clarification on his comments after Arsenal’s last match, a 3-1 defeat at West Brom a fortnight ago, in which he said he had “decided” whether or not to sign the two-year contract believed to be on offer from the Arsenal board.
