Tony Adams has urged Arsenal to start being competitive in the transfer market after Arsene Wenger committed his future to the club.

Wenger signed a two-year contract on Wednesday, bringing months of speculation in regards to the Frenchman's future to an end.

The Gunners boss has vowed to challenge for the Premier League title next season but is expected to make significant changes to his squad in order to do so, having finished fifth this term.

But Adams, who is convinced the current crop are not good enough to challenge for major honours, has questioned Arsenal's ability to attract the very best players.

"Maybe he [Wenger] thinks they can win the league in the next two years or get back into the Champions League," Adams told BBC Wiltshire.

"Looking at this squad, I don't think they can.

"But I can understand the frustration of the fans that want a league title and want to be competitive.

"We need to start being competitive and seen as number one by number one players instead of number four players on the pecking list."

Meanwhile, anti-Wenger Arsenal fans have vowed to come back stronger next season, despite seeing their manager agree to extend his reign at Emirates Stadium.

The 'No New Contract' movement will meet later this month to plan future activities, with further aircraft fly overs expected to be on the agenda.
