Antonio Conte has apologised to Liverpool for Cesc Fabregas' red card challenge on Ragnar Klavan, saying there was 'no excuse' for the nature of the Chelsea midfielder's challenge.

Fabregas was shown a straight red card with 20 minutes of the International Champions Cup clash remaining, with the Spain international catching Klavan on the foot with a late sliding lunge.

Conte said he knew Fabregas was a 'good man' and had apologised to Liverpool in their dressing room afterwards, and that the tackle may have been a result of fatigue as the match wore on.

The Chelsea coach expressed regret for what happened but doesn't think Fabregas' actions were intentional, telling reporters: "I am sorry for this - the player the same.

"No excuse. I am sorry for him and for the Liverpool player.

"In this period sometimes the fatigue it can bring a bit of.. to go too late in a situation.

"As I know Fabregas is a good man and not a player to have this situation. I am sorry for him and every Liverpool player."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said of Fabregas' challenge: "It’s a red card," he told reporters. "He came by us in the dressing room and said sorry. He came too late in the challenge, of course.

"Sometimes in life if you are too late you get a red card, especially in football. That’s how it was."
