Crystal Palace have announced the signing of Andros Townsend from Newcastle United for a fee of £11 million.

The 24-year-old has penned a five-year deal to become Alan Pardew's first signing of the summer transfer window.

Townsend moved to the North East from Tottenham as recently as January but, despite scoring four goals in 13 Premier League appearances for Rafa Benitez's side, was unable to stop the club dropping into the Championship.

Palace have taken advantage of a release clause inserted into Townsend's contract that allowed him to leave St. James' Park for a certain price, which has now been met.

Townsend is delighted to have sealed a return to the capital and is keen to start a new chapter in his career at Selhurst Park:

He told the club's official website: "I'm extremely delighted. I had chats with the manager and chairman before I signed and I'm pleased to a part of Crystal Palace's future. By the sounds of things it's going to be a bright one and I can't wait to get started."

Chairman Steve Parish has also spoken of his delight at completing a deal for Townsend, who narrowly missed out on a place in England's Euro 2016 squad this summer.

"It’s fantastic that we’ve managed to get a player of Andros’ quality into the Club. He has played in the Premier League for a number of years and represented England on many occasions and yet he's still only 24-years-old.

“Andros is another exciting attacking talent that we have added to our ranks and I can’t wait to see him in a red and blue shirt in the very near future.”

The announcement comes shortly after striker Dwight Gayle's move in the opposite direction, joining the Championship side, and departure is likely to see Pardew step up his search for a forward after seeing his side struggle for goal for long periods last season.

Yohan Cabaye was the south Londoners' top scorer with just five goals and, should Gayle depart, Pardew will have just Connor Wickham and Fraizer Campbell to choose from at the start of pres-season.
