Amazon's first round of Premier League fixtures saw the record for Prime memberships broken twice in two days as millions tuned in to a new era of broadcasting.

The American giants became the first broadcaster to show a complete round of fixtures on UK television as they took on Premier League football for the first time since agreeing a three-year-deal worth £90million.

Fans took advantage of Amazon's free 30-day trial which covers both rounds shown by Prime Video this season, with another 10 games to be streamed across Boxing Day and December 27.

The offering of Premier League football trumped any Black Friday for Prime subscriptions as well as the day Amazon's Top Gear spin-off, The Grand Tour, launched.

While the production impressed many viewers there were consistent complaints of a lag, with tweets or push notifications from other sources informing supporters of goals before they had seen them go in on their stream.

Prime Video opted for a rather familiar and safe approach on-screen, with their only real innovations being a commentary-free option and a stream of in game stats and highlights available to watch almost immediately.

“We’re delighted that millions of football fans enjoyed watching Amazon’s first ever round of Premier League matches on Prime Video.” said Alex Green, MD Prime Video Sport Europe. “We are excited to be the first ever broadcaster to bring fans all 10 games live in a fixture round."

Boxing Day will see almost more than nine hours of continuous coverage, starting from 11.30am as Brighton visit Tottenham in the early kick off before League leaders Liverpool host former manager Brendan Rodgers and his Leicester side for an 8pm kick-off at Anfield.

Amazon have recruited a well know cast of more than 70 commentators, presenters and pundits to lead their coverage across both rounds.
